Jim Marteney is a speech/broadcasting instructor at a southern California community college where he was voted Professor of the Year by the Associated Student Body. For almost 20 years his teaching focus has been in critical and creative thinking, group communication and problem solving, and intercollegiate competitive speaking. Jim is the co-author of the critical thinking textbook, Communicating Critical Thinking, and author of a group communication workbook, Our Groups/Our Roles. His classes have been described in the Los Angeles Times as a Phil Donahue approach to teaching "where the goal is to engage the class with information and make students respond and react."
Jim believes that in every class, the instructor creates the climate and designs activities that allow the student to enthusiastically explore the subject. He believes the classroom should be a place where information isn't just memorized but instead critically explored and evaluated.
Prior to teaching at a community college, Jim participated in a variety of teaching environments: lecturer at University of California at Santa Barbara and California Lutheran University, and instructor for three years at the California Youth Authority where he taught communication, English and economic theory to inmates in the youth correctional system.
Besides working in the classroom, Jim also conducts training programs in business and industry, including Arthur Young and Company, Coopers & Librand and Lockheed Corporation. He also was head speech writer for two California State Assembly campaigns. Currently, he serves on the board of the California Community College Council for Staff.
